The
Vicar - Revd Stephen Heygate
I started as vicar of St Denys and Priest in Charge of St. Philip's
in Evington in May 2000 being 51 years old when I arrived, having
served 10 years at my last parish of Cosby and prior to that two
years as a curate in Aylestone, both in the Leicester Diocese.
I spent 17 years trying to say no to God and avoid ordination, a
futile exercise, I was 39 years old when I was ordained. In my
attempt to avoid the commitment that I knew God wanted me to make I
had worked in a flour mill for a year, a graduate research chemist
with ICI before becoming a Probation Officer for Leicestershire
Probation Service for 15 years, the last eight of which was in the
specialised area of domestic work; adoption, Wardship and divorce.
In a sense I had 17 years apprenticeship for the work of a parish
priest. |
In
July 2005 Marion, my wife, and will have been married for 34 years; she
claims she would have served less than half that time for murder. We have
two grown up children both of whom have now flown the nest.
My
main interest outside the church is mountain walking and each year I am
granted parole to go mountain walking in Scotland (known as ‘Munro
bagging’ to those involved – there are 284 and I gained my 100th
in 2004 – my total is currently 113).
As far as my church
affiliations are concerned I would see myself as ‘slopping around the low
side of middle’. My main concern is to see the church play a more central
part in our host community.
